Re: making semi realistic windows
There are many different ways to make them look realistic, with clouds reflecting on the glass, aluminum panes... You need to be more specific about what you want to achieve.
The best way is to find a photo with the look you like, then it's easy to replicate the gradients by looking at the different window parts. The issue is as always in seeing how shadows and highlights make it look realistic.

Re: making semi realistic windows
well, I wasn't thinking to put any relflections on them, just some highlights. however, a tutorial or something on a basic way to make a window would be great and then I can expand on that myself.

You can watch this tutorial ( http://screencasters.heathenx.org/episode-072/ ) or just look at the screen shots on the into page. Do one wavie high light heathenx does to finish off his tutorials. The faint high light that goes all the way across the computer screen as if the screen is concave and lit from above give the impression of a glass window.
Can also look at the screen shot for this episode.

He does the high light like 14 minus into the video on episode 65.
