Even though it should be self-explanatory, I'm going to state my problem in greater detail. My plan is to use the pen in order to create my stroke. Afterwards, I want to let the width be increased between nodes 3 and 4 from 10px to 13px.
I'm new here (regarding Inkscape and the forum) and help would be appreciated.

That seems a good explanation of your question, any less detail would be no question at all! 
From the control bar for the Bezier tool use the drop down menu to choose triangle in or triangle out. Then afterwards use the node tool to adjust the control points (not nodes) and add or drag them to change the taper.
In the attached image the paths are the same but the widths have been changed in this method.

That's exactly what I was searching for. And the thing with the 'nodes' has to do with the fact that I'm running the german version.

no sorry, I meant that when you have the 'powerstroke' effect in use, you will have 'nodes' that work as usual to shape the path curvature and on the path edges you will have 'control points' to adjust the thickness of the curve, both will need the nodetool to adjust them.
