How can I get a different color in the white area of the "flower petals", than what I put in the background, inside the circle?

If I select the circle, and put in a fill color, the white area of the "petals" gets the same color.

The only thing I can think, is to make a copy of the "flower" shape (without the holes), make it white, and put it underneath, between the filled circle and the "flower". Is that the best way?

What if I wanted to put a different color in the white area of each "petal"? Would I make a copy of the "flower" (without holes), make each "petal" a different color, and put it between the "flower" and the filled circle?

The Paint Bucket tool is made for things like this.

But I recall that you're using Inkscape 0.44, so you haven't got a paint bucket. So I think the method you suggested yourself is the way to go (but remember to remove the stroke from the copy you put underneath).

Hey, here's an interesting thought. Is it possible to have installed and use at different times, 2 different versions of Inkscape? For example, with 0.44, I can use the Duplicate Window feature, with my uncommon screen resolution, to do fine detailed work. But then if I have a need for a feature in 0.46, could I simply reopen the image in 0.46, and use whatever feature I need, the Paint Bucket tool, in this case?

Yes, it makes sense that features of 0.46 couldn't be editted in 0.44. And that once I edit something in 0.46, it could affect its future editability in 0.44. I understand that I will have to be careful about these things, and definitely keep files saved and backed up while working on them.

This idea comes near to solving every problem I have, as discussed in the other thread.
